"Greeting pad" in the front of a home

This view shows a front yard "greeting pad" made of brick pavers. The home is in Naperville, Illinois. Our clients enjoy sitting in front in the evening twilight. We also planted around the perimeter. 
Note the seating wall behind that provides partial enclosure. It adds an outdoor living space feel. Seating walls are an entirely appropriate use of segmental concrete wall stones, an otherwise overused product. 
The witch in the left foreground was added by our client as a Halloween embellishment. 


 This view gives you a better look at the seating wall. 



This view from the street illustrates the sense of enclosure the clients have. The greeting pad is partially hidden yet it provides enough opening to look outward.

CONTAINER GARDENING

Container gardening yields wonderful results throughout the year. Here is what we planted recently in just a few minutes in Chula Vista, California.  This window box outside our dining room window was planted last May. It did not thrive. It looked nice at first. We had hummingbirds (see photo). But after the initial bloom, we had just few more flowers. The location does not receive enough sun, just a few hours mid-afternoon.  We removed the tired geraniums and replanted shade tolerant red New Guinea Impatiens. Here is the result from just six 4-inch plants. Each cost $5.00 for a total of $30.00 plus tax. Easy! Container gardening is done mostly standing up. You do not have to dig holes in hard native soil. The plants can be changed out as often you like to complement the seasons. If you live in an area with cold winters Impatiens are not appropriate now. Shop your local garden center. A marvelous DIY garden in Eastlake Chula Vista, California

Pearling Here is an excellent DIY designed garden in Southern California  We discovered this homeowner-designed and planted front yard during our daily exercise walks near our home in the Eastlake neighborhood of Chula Vista, near San Diego California. Denise, the homeowner, said that she and her husband created it in large part to eliminate the maintenance demands of their former front lawn. The result has been a complete success.  This garden is filled with easy-care shrubbery-with accents of color throughout. There is some nice hardscaping.
