OUR HUMMINGBIRD DINER Hum along with us...a 2 minute 18 second slideshow... If you love hummingbirds you might like this video we produced. There are as many as four hummers in some of these photos. More than 1,000 images were culled down to these 35. It was photographed in my garden on January 16. My camera was set up to shoot automatically every three seconds on a tripod with a wireless intervalometer. That's sort of like a remote control...it's set and forget. I was able to walk away for an hour. If a hummingbird was there when the camera clicked, we got it. You will see that we captured the sparkle in their eyes in many of the images. That's known as a "catchlight" in photography. We are fortunate to be able to enjoy the company of hummingbirds year round in the San Diego area. A large cardon cactus being wrapped and dug for transplant. When is this cactus was planted 15 years ago it was less than 18 inches tall. The cardon, Pachycereus pringlei, is native to northwest Mexico. It is almost identical to the saguaro that grows in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona. It grows much more quickly than the saguaro. However, it is not frost tolerant and not a good variety if you live in Phoenix or Tucson. Click link below to view the time-lapse and video clips. A fungus among us… We found this unique appearing growth in our front garden just a few steps from our front door in Chula Vista, California. Some Google searching indicates that it is a type of fungus, probably in the mushroom category. We first saw it seven days ago. It has doubled in size in that time. The largest of the individual spheres is 7/8 inch (23mm) in diameter. The overall size of the entire growth is 9.5 inches (240mm) by 6 inches (160mm) by about 4 inches (100mm) tall. I have never seen anything like this before. Have you?
A marvelous DIY garden in Eastlake Chula Vista, California

Pearling Here is an excellent DIY designed garden in Southern California We discovered this homeowner-designed and planted front yard during our daily exercise walks near our home in the Eastlake neighborhood of Chula Vista, near San Diego California. Denise, the homeowner, said that she and her husband created it in large part to eliminate the maintenance demands of their former front lawn. The result has been a complete success. This garden is filled with easy-care shrubbery-with accents of color throughout. There is some nice hardscaping. This garden almost perfectly follows my five recommendations for garden design: 1) Have plan 2) Planted beds are everything 3) Never use plastic edging, cheap concrete blocks, or gaudy colored mulch 4) Hardscapes will make or break your garden 5) The finishing touches This single-family home sits in a quiet neighborhood in a lesser-known area of metropolitan San Diego. Our fried fern is recovering
The kids are alright... When we first noticed our fried fern last weekend, we feared we might lose it. All of the fronds had turned brown probably from the hot, sunny weather we've had. Ferns prefer cooler, moist weather. The dead fronds have been pruned. We have a heathy new fiddlehead emerging. Several weeks will be needed to fill in completely.
